Almaza Airport has witnessed many achievements since the first day of its opening, and at the present time it is an air base belonging to the Egyptian Air Force, and the airport is called several names, including: East Cairo Air Base, which is symbolized by (ICAO: HEAZ), and also It is called Almaza Air Base.

Airport history

When the Republic of Egypt was under British occupation, no plane was allowed to use the only airport in Egypt “Heliopolis Airport”, except for British planes, as Britain was using it during and after World War I by British Air Force planes, so the Egyptian government established an airport for Egypt , for Egyptian aircraft.

It was completed in 1932, when five "Tiger Moth" aircraft took off, out of ten aircraft piloted by three Egyptian pilots; They are Fouad Hajjaj, Abdel Moneim Megawiti, the pilot Ahmed Abdel Razek, and two British pilots, who took off from the “Hatfield” base north of London, and landed at Almaza Airport, on the opening day, in the presence of King Fouad, who opened the airport, in addition to a large crowd, so It became the first airport in Egypt, and the second airport, was Dekheila Airport in Alexandria.

And on April 11, 1931, the “LZ 127” airship landed at (5:15) at Almaza Airport, which was piloted by “Graf Zeppelin”, on its second trip to the Middle East, and among the ground crew who received it were British soldiers, In addition to more than (30.00) people watching how to land, and on the date of February 5 of the year 1962, the Russian astronaut, whose name was “Yuri Gagarin,” was received at the same airport.

Incidents that occurred near the airport

  • The crash of a British Air Force C-47 Sky plane, when the pilot misjudged the location of the runway during the night, which led to the plane hitting the ground and igniting, on November 30, 1945.
  • An Egyptian 161 SNCASE SE.161 Languedoc crashed during the plane's emergency landing, after its engine No. (1) caught fire, when it was heading to Sudan on July 30, 1952, but none of its crew died.
  • The crash of an Egyptian Firs Viking 1B634, while it was landing on runway No. (32), on September 15, 1954.
  • The crash of the Egyptian Vickers Visca Net, while it was on the grounds of the airport, as a result of an air strike by the British Air Force during the tripartite aggression against Egypt, on October 1, 1956.
