Naming the city of Beni Suef

It is noteworthy that the ancient name of the city was Bovisia, and it is one of the oldest Egyptian sacred cities in the Nile Valley, which played a distinguished role in the ancient Egyptian civilization, and was the seat of one of the kings of ancient Egypt, as it was the capital of the country during the era of the ninth and tenth Pharaonic families, and the city continued to play a role important during the Greek and Roman eras, and it is worth saying that the city was known in the Coptic language as “Bani Souf”, and the name was distorted from Bovisia to Menvisia after the Arab conquest of Egypt; This is so that it is easier to pronounce in the Arabic language.

The name changed in 1527 AD to Bani Yusuf. It is a designation attributed to one of the Bedouin Arab tribes that lived in the region, and during the French campaign against Egypt, Beni Suef became the capital of that region, and after the revolution of July 23, 1952 AD, the modern and contemporary governorate was established as it is known today.
