It is considered the capital of Qena Governorate, and at the same time the largest of its cities. This city has distinctive and important landmarks, including the University of South Valley and the Abdel Rahman Al-Qenawi Mosque. This beautiful city ranked third in a competition held by UNESCO to choose the most beautiful cities in the world.

Qena Governorate is considered one of the governorates of southern Upper Egypt. This governorate is located approximately six hundred kilometers south of Cairo Governorate. Qena Governorate includes ten major cities, nine centers, and forty-one rural local units. The city of Qena has many names in history. In the time of the Pharaohs, it was called Shabat. In the Greek era, it was called Kineoulius. In the Roman era, it was called Maximiat, while in the Coptic era it was called Qona Okuna. Finally, in the Muslim era, it was called Akni and Men. This name derived its current name.

The Nile River passes through the middle of this governorate, which is the reason for the advancement of agricultural activity there. As for the eastern side of it, there are the Red Sea mountain ranges, while to the western side lies the Western Desert. Due to the presence of granite rocks, the river changes its course in this region to form what is known as In the name of Thanyat Qena, which is distinguished by the geography of this governorate, and according to studies of petroleum scientists, this geography has contributed to the availability of good and economic quantities of crude oil.

Climate of Qena

The climate in this region is continental; The temperature is very high in the summer and very cold in the winter. The climate throughout the year is characterized by dryness, and rain falls very rarely in this governorate. Temperatures range between six degrees in the winter and forty degrees Celsius in the summer. The winds in this region are northeasterly winds, and they may also be exposed to torrential rains that fall on them from the Red Sea highlands.

The population in this region practices various economic activities, including agricultural activity. The cultivated area in this region is estimated at approximately one thousand acres, in addition to the presence of approximately one thousand arable acres. The irrigation system in this region depends on the flooding process, and sugarcane crops are considered the most cultivated crops in this region. The second activity practiced by the residents of this region is industrial activity. There are several important industrial investments in this governorate, including: metallurgy, chemical, cement, and pharmaceutical industries.
