Damanhur is considered one of the Egyptian cities located in the north of the Egyptian Republic, and it is the capital of the Buhaira Governorate, and it is about sixty kilometers away from Alexandria towards the southeast. Its population, according to 2011 AD statistics, is about 242.700 people. Such as: the city of light, the city of victory, and the city of the lake.

Naming the city of Damanhur

The city of Damanhur was known in ancient times, and according to what was mentioned in the ancient Egyptian texts, by the name of De Min Hor, which means the city of the god Hor or Horus, as it was a center for the worship of this god at that time, as it was known by other names; Including: Bahdat, Hermopolis Parfa as mentioned in the ancient Greek texts, and Apollonopolis after the Greek idol Apollo, and finally it was called Tell Blamon, but the Egyptians quickly renamed it Manhour, and after the Islamic conquests reached it, it became known by its current name, Damanhour.

The geographical location of the city of Damanhur

Damanhur is located in the northwestern part of the delta, and in the northeastern part of the Buhaira governorate, where it is bordered by the northern part of Mahmoudiya, and from the eastern part by the centers of Rahmaniyah and Shabrakhit, and from the western part by the center of Abu Homs, and from the southern part by the center of Dalanjat, and penetrated by the Mahmoudiyah Canal.

History of the city of Damanhur

The inhabitants of the lake revolted against the French more than once, and in every revolution for them, many of its people, notables, and residents were killed by hanging, and they also took many of its people hostage until they stopped the revolution, and this continued until Abu Abdullah Al-Maghribi, one of the sheikhs of Morocco, came and called on its people to Jihad, and made Damanhur his capital.

Abu Abdullah al-Maghribi defeated Napoleon Bonaparte in five battles, the last of which ended with his martyrdom and the martyrdom of two thousand men from the lake. In addition, Napoleon issued an order to destroy the city's residents and burn them alive in the houses and roads. Thus, the number of martyrs was estimated at about a quarter of the city's population.
