The city of Rosetta is located in the north of Egypt and on the bank of the West Rosetta Branch, and its northern borders are on the Mediterranean Sea, and its eastern borders overlook the Nile River branch, while from the western borders it is bordered by Abu Qir Bay, and from the southern borders it is bordered by Abu Mandour Hill, and as for the Egyptian cities it is a distance About sixty kilometers from the city of Alexandria from the east, about fifty-five kilometers from the north from the city of Damanhur, and about two hundred and sixty-three kilometers from the city of Cairo from the north.

It was considered one of the governorates of Egypt in the past, but in the year one thousand eight hundred and ninety-five AD, the Rashid governorate was canceled, and it was annexed to the Buhaira Directorate, in the year one thousand eight hundred and ninety-six.

The Coptic name of Rashid is Rakhit, hence its Arabic name Rashid. It is a prosperous city, as it was mentioned in the book Nuzhat al-Mushtaq that it is a civilized city because of its markets, trade, wheat farms, legumes, palm trees, types of fruits, and types of fish. The actual role of the city of Rashid began when the Fatimid state was established in the year nine hundred and sixty-nine AD, as it participated in commercial activities, which restored urbanization to it.

Its history

In the year one thousand two hundred and sixty-two AD, al-Zahir Baybars built a fort in the city of Rosetta, to monitor any possible upcoming invasion by the Crusaders, and the city of Rosetta had contributions in launching the marine campaigns of Sultan Barbasai to invade Cyprus, until it came under Egyptian control, and that was in the year one thousand four hundred twenty-six.

The city of Rosetta was attacked by the Knights of Rhodes, where its property was seized, then it was protected, then its castle was renovated, and thus Rosetta had a major defensive role, to protect it and Egypt.

In the era of the Ottomans, the city of Rosetta became of great importance due to the presence of one of the two branches of the Nile in it, especially after the neglect of the Gulf of Alexandria, as this facilitated the passage of ships from the Mediterranean Sea to it, then Cairo and the rest of the cities, and the city of Rosetta was the closest to Constantinople, which was then the capital of the Ottoman Empire .
