Excess weight is considered one of the most prominent problems that people, including children, youth, and the elderly, are exposed to in most societies. In our present era, there are more obese people in Arab societies than in other societies, due to a combination of several factors and reasons.

Causes of excess weight

  • Lack of movement, due to the ease and wide spread of transportation, and the lack of spaces designated for walking.
  • Lack of time, as most of the time is spent at work and coming home late, which leads to not allocating time to exercise.
  • Fast food: Fast food is also one of the most important causes of obesity, because it contains complex fats due to constantly eating it at work, at home, or even in fast food restaurants that are widespread now. These meals are high in calories that are difficult for the body to burn easily.
  • Not exercising regularly.
  • Eating meals late at night (evening meal).
  • Sugars: Eating sugary foods and soft drinks that contain large amounts of sugar and are high in calories.
  • Replace fresh food, such as meat and vegetables, with frozen and canned food, or food with added preservatives.

Following such methods in our daily lives may lead to serious damage that causes us to lose health and beauty at the same time, and is caused by the accumulation of fats that may lead to an increase in the level of cholesterol in the blood, and this may lead to severe heart attacks or the occurrence of clots, so we must pay attention to our foods. And our daily drinks, and we must follow a balanced diet to maintain an ideal weight for agility of movement and attractive appearance, and for a good life free of diseases.

Ways to lose weight

To maintain the fitness and health of our bodies, and to get rid of obesity, we must do the following:

  • Practicing all kinds of sports: Practicing various types and forms of sports regularly for (30) minutes a day, the most important of which are brisk walking and swimming, has a very effective role in strengthening and tightening the heart muscle and body muscles, renewing blood circulation, and getting rid of excess weight as quickly as possible.
  • Maintaining drinking water: Drinking water daily has great benefits that are reflected in the human body and gives it the necessary activity. It increases the rate of perfusion in the body, purifies the blood and kidneys of impurities, and helps in getting rid of headaches, constipation, lethargy, dehydration, etc.
  • Eating plenty of vegetables and fruits: Eating vegetables before or after a meal, or even while eating them, makes the body feel full and satiated, and this is one of the most important methods of getting rid of excess weight. Because it reduces the portion of food, and makes the body active, away from lethargy, because of the elements it contains that are very beneficial to the body, such as iron, salts, minerals, fibers, and vitamins, as well as fruits.
  • Do not eat a lot of sweets and soft drinks: Sweets of all kinds contain very large proportions of sugar, fat and high calories that make a person feel lethargic. This can be treated by eating small proportions of them or even replacing them with sugary fruits such as: (grapes, apples, peaches, Watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, etc.), and you can also avoid drinking soft drinks because they contain very high levels of sugar and substances modified with natural juices that are beneficial to the body.
  • Avoid eating fast food: Ready-made or home-cooked fast food is very dangerous for the human body and heart, because it is saturated with fat.

Harmful oils or even preservatives that are difficult for the body to burn easily, and they are among the most important causes of weight gain.

  • Movement: Do not sit for long hours without moving, especially people who work in the office field. They must move, stand, and walk to stimulate blood circulation in the body, restore activity to it again, and remove tension. This is because stress at work increases the feeling of hunger, and thus increases the person’s desire to eat.

From the above, it becomes clear to us that maintaining the body’s fitness in moderation keeps us away from diseases that we do not need, such as: (diabetes, strokes, heart disease, and high cholesterol), and as the Noble Messenger, peace be upon him, said, “Fast and you will be healthy.” Our bodies are a trust that must be preserved and strengthened. This is to be in good health because a healthy mind resides in a healthy body.
