Jabal Hamrin site
The Hamrin Mountains are a small mountain range located in the northeast of the State of Iraq. They form the western side of the Zagros Mountains, and extend from Diyala Governorate, located on the Iranian border, towards the northwest to the Tigris River. On its way, it passes through the north of Saladin Governorate and the south of Kirkuk Governorate, and in the past These mountains were part of the border region between Babylon in the south and Assyria in the north, and today they form part of the border that separates the Arabic-speaking part of Iraq from the Kurdish-speaking part.
Zagros mountain range
The Zagros Mountains are a mountain range located southwest of Iran. Its length reaches 1600 kilometers and its width exceeds 240 kilometers. Most of it is located in the state of Iran. Its slopes extend to the north and west towards neighboring countries. It extends from the northwest to the southeast from the border areas located east of Iran. The State of Turkey, and the north of the State of Iraq towards the Strait of Hormuz.
The semi-mountainous region in Iraq
The semi-mountainous region of Iraq is a transitional region between the high mountains region and the alluvial plain region. It constitutes 15% of the area of the State of Iraq, and its altitude ranges between 200-1000 m. The nature of the land in this region varies; The hills and mountain ranges form its southern borders: the Hamrin, Makhul, Atshan, Adi, and Ibrahim mountains. As for the hills, they are located near the western bank of the Tigris River, and extend to the west of the city of Mosul until reaching the mountain ranges again. Three rivers penetrate the region: Diyala, The great one that passes through the Hamrin Mountains and the Tigris River, and after these chains extend wide alluvial plains and plateaus that separate this region from several short mountain chains, parallel to each other, starting from the Iraqi-Iranian border, and ending east of the city of Kirkuk.
