It is a mountain range located mostly within the territory of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, specifically in its western part. It is considered one of the most important highlands of the Western Arabian Peninsula. It extends from the Republic of Yemen in the south through the Hijaz, reaching the Gulf of Aqaba in the north. The summit of Jabal al-Nabi Shuaib, which is located in the western part of the Yemeni capital, Sana'a, is the highest peak in this chain, and its height above sea level is 3666 metres.

The Sarawat Mountains descend towards the west towards the Tihama Valleys located in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As for the east, many valleys flow from them. We find in them tributaries to Wadi Najran and also to Wadi Habouna, and also the tributaries of Wadi Al-Dawasir in its upper reaches are represented by Wadi Bisha and Wadi Thalithith, and there is Wadi Taraba and also Wadi Raniyah. .

Sections of the Sarawat Mountains

The Sarawat mountain range, located within the territory of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is divided into five main sections, which are:

  • Sarat Thaqif Mountains: These are the Sarat Mountains overlooking Mount Arafat and its environs, and they extend towards the south.
  • Sarat Bani Malik Mountains.
  • The mountains of Sarat Zahran and Sarat Ghamid: They come after the mountains of Sarat Bani Malik, and are in contact with them.
  • Al Hajar Mountains: It is connected to the Sarat Asir Mountains on its southeastern side.
  • Asir Mountains: These are the Sarat Mountains that are found around and east of the city of Abha.

Important information about the Sarawat Mountains

The length of the Sarawat Mountains, located in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is only 1550 square kilometers, while the width of these mountains ranges from a few kilometers, reaching in some places more than 140 square kilometers. It is noted that their height increases as we move towards the south or towards... The north, while in the centre, they are considered somewhat low places, and the Sarawat mountain range is considered one of the most important terrains in the Arabian Peninsula region, which extends from the north from the Gulf of Aqaba, until we find it bordering the Red Sea to reach the south of the city of Sana’a.

The Sarawat Mountains, in general, are peaceful mountains in their form, refractive, but they form a noticeable slope towards the Red Sea, and the summit of Mount (Al-Sawda), which is located near the city of Abha, is the highest mountain peak in these western highlands within the territory of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Its height above sea level is 3015 meters, and its rocks are igneous rocks of basalt or granite, and some of them are transformed from schist or gneiss, and these rocks date back to an era prior to the Cambrian period.
