Expansion project

The waste water treatment plant in Al-Khirbet Al-Samra was renovated in 2008 AD, which limited the unpleasant odors that used to fill the air in Zarqa and Al-Mafraq, and work is still ongoing on the second phase, where the Ministry of Water and Irrigation has been carrying out expansion operations since October 11, 2012 AD, and according to statements, the project needs 36 months until it is fully completed, and this project is funded by (Millennium Challenge Company) or Millennium Challenge Account - Jordan, and the expansion goals are summarized according to the supporting company to increase the capacity, reaching the station to treat the increasing quantities of wastewater by 97,800 meters cube per day, and develop the plant's capacity to treat suspended solids, biological and other necessary treatment requirements.

The objectives of the expansion project

  • Improving and allocating scarce water resources, by increasing the replacement of freshwater for treated wastewater in agriculture from 31% to 70%, making additional freshwater available for consumption in urban areas.
  • By the end of September the overall cumulative progress of the project to about 58%, time elapsed to date 40%. The study of biosolids has begun. The study identified four options for solid waste treatment.
  • Construction underway and ahead of schedule MCC and USAID are collaborating on a feasibility study on biosolid storage and reuse in agriculture and land use. This study, in turn, will assist the Government of Jordan in developing a beneficial use strategy and developing relevant standards and guidelines.
