Weight loss can be the first symptom of tuberculosis, HIV, a hookworm infection in the digestive tract, or persistent inflammation in a part or parts of the human body. Inflammation can occur for many reasons.

Malabsorption syndrome

The main role of the small intestine is to absorb nutrients from the food that is eaten. In the case of malabsorption syndrome, the intestine suffers from several disorders that make it unable to absorb sufficient amounts of nutrients and fluids, whether they are macronutrients such as proteins, fats and carbohydrates, or micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals.
