As for the Portuguese, they arrived in this city in the 16th century AD and expelled all the Muslims from it and colonized it, and built castles there to protect them and their trade.
After that, the Dutch occupied it after besieging it for a long time in 1656 AD, and this city became the capital of the maritime provinces of the Dutch and East India Company, and finally Great Britain occupied it and made it the capital of the British colony of Ceylon, from which it became independent and gained its freedom in 1948 AD to the present day. It is worth mentioning that this city is the city that was chosen to exile Ahmed Orabi, Mahmoud Al-Baroud, and Abdullah Al-Nadim to it at that time. From the foregoing, it is clear to us the importance of this geographical city, according to the large number of countries that seized it, colonized it, and exploited its ports and resources.
