“Gharibiya” is the daughter of an old man and the sister of five children, the eldest of them. She used to go to the forest every day to bring firewood and food for her younger sisters and her old father. In this forest lives a fierce, cunning monster, who goes to the village at night to kidnap children and devour them. The old father and his daughter agreed, “Gharibiya.” On the condition that she return every day before sunset, and when she reaches the door of her house, she must knock three ways and then rattle her bracelets, so that her father knows that the one at the door is his daughter, “a stranger.” A “ghariba” goes out every day and goes back to her house and does what she agreed upon with her father. She arrives at the door. She knocks three ways, and her father approaches the door. She clinks with her bracelets, so the old man knows that she is his daughter. It was on this story that the wonderful song “Gharibiya” and her old father, Avanova, was composed.
