File compression steps

The compressed file is a copy of the original file, but in a smaller size to be able to save it on the hard disk space, and it is used exactly as if it were the original file, and any file can be compressed by following these steps:

  • Right click on the file you want to compress.
  • Choose “Send to”.
  • Choose Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • A new compressed file will appear with the same name as the original file. To change its name, you can right-click on it and choose “Rename” and write the new name.

Compress a file using email

To compress the file using e-mail, the following steps can be followed:

  • Create a new email.
  • Click on “Attach File”.
  • Find the files that the person wants to attach, and they must all be in the same folder.
  • Select all the files to be compressed, and to select multiple files at once, hold down the (Ctrl) key and click on each file one by one.
  • Right-click on the selected files.
  • Choose “Send to,” then choose “compressed (zipped) folder.” Here, Windows will quickly compress the files, creating a new zip file immediately ready to be renamed if necessary.
  • Press (Enter) and then attach the newly created zip file to the email.

Compress files in Thunderbird

Files are automatically compressed in Thunderbird since its fifth version when more than 20 MB of disk space is saved. Manual compression can also be activated, through:

To compress all files together, follow these steps:

  • Click on “File”.
  • Choose “Compact Folders”

Add files to the zip file

Files or folders can be added to a zipped folder created before, by dragging the file or folder, into the zipped folder, and if encrypted files are added to the zipped folder, they will become unencrypted upon decompression, which may result in accidental disclosure of personal information Therefore, it is recommended to avoid compressing encrypted files.
