Palm cultivation methods

Cultivation of palm trees by seeds

Cultivation of palm trees using seeds is a difficult process. Because it is slow to germinate and needs a good environment for growth, the following are the steps for planting palm seeds:

  • Choose the appropriate type of palm tree, then buy the seeds from an experienced farmer.
  • Examine the seeds carefully for color and hardness, as green seeds are too small to plant, while seeds that crumble easily when pressed firmly with fingers may be very old.
  • Putting good seeds in a bowl of water for 24 hours in order to absorb water, as this increases the chance of seed germination.
  • Mix equal parts of perlite and peat moss, then fill three-quarters of the pot with soil, then place the seeds on the soil, and add the mixture to the remaining quarter. It is worth noting that three to four seeds can be planted in a pot with a capacity of about 3.7 liters.
  • Putting the pot in a warm and moist place in order to provide a suitable environment for growth, so that the temperature must be at least 80 degrees, and the humidity is at least 65%.
  • Irrigate the soil constantly in order to keep it moist. Germination can take up to a year depending on the type of seed used. Seedlings are transplanted outdoors after they are well established.

Cultivation of palm trees by offshoots

Palm trees are grown by cuttings by taking the following steps:

  • Search for an offshoot that is 30 cm long, then cut it from the mother plant, and the cut must be as close as possible to the base of the mother plant, in order to obtain most of the roots, and it is preferable to cut the offshoots in the spring.
  • Mix two amounts of agricultural soil with an amount of coarse sand or perlite, after which the mixture is poured into a container and then the soil mixture is moistened.
  • Place the sapling in the soil and cover the pot with a sheet of transparent plastic. A temperature of at least 21 degrees Celsius must be maintained, and the plant should be watered when the soil dries.
  • Waiting for a month, then removing the plastic cover, and when the seedling begins to grow, it is cared for like a mature palm tree.
  • Move the plant to another pot in the spring, and use the soil mix.

Palm tree care

You must pay attention to the care of the palm tree after planting it, and this is done through the following:

  • Mix alkaline soil with sulfur.
  • The soil contains organic nutrients spread over a large area; This is because the roots will spread.
  • Avoid burying the stems in the soil when planting the plant, as this may lead to rotting.
  • Provide supplementary nutrition to the plant through fertilizers.
  • Replace the mulch bed annually.
