Seas and oceans

World of seas and oceans

oceans

The oceans can be defined as large areas consisting of salty water, covering approximately 72% of the Earth's surface, and inhabiting 230,000 species of marine creatures. They are considered part of the carbon and water cycle important to life on Earth, and they affect weather and climate patterns on Earth.

Names of the world's oceans

The Earth has five oceans:

  • Pacific: It is the largest ocean in the world, and it extends over an area of 165.25 million square kilometers, making up a third of the total area of the Earth. The Mariana Trench is the deepest point and is located in the northwest of this ocean.
  • Indian OceanIt is the ocean with the highest temperature among the oceans in the world, and it is characterized by its great biodiversity, resulting from the warmth of its tropical waters, and it constitutes a profitable fishing area for shrimp and tuna fish globally, and the point of Diamantina Deep is the deepest point in this ocean.
  • Atlantic Ocean: It covers an area of 20% of the Earth's surface, with an average depth of 3,339 meters. The Milwaukee Deep is the deepest point in it, and it is located in the Puerto Rico Trench.
  • Antarctic Ocean: It is the fourth largest of the oceans, and its depth ranges between 4000-5000 metres.
  • Arctic Ocean: It is the smallest ocean in the world, and the least deep. It is located in the Arctic Circle, with an area of 14,056,000 square kilometers. It is connected to the Pacific Ocean by the Bering Strait.

Seas

The seas can be defined as wide figures of salty water surrounded by land on all sides, and the sea can be part of the ocean and connected to it, such as the Caspian Sea, and the Dead Sea, which is classified among the large salty lakes, surrounded by land on all sides, and there are many seas in the world; Such as the Red Sea, the Black Sea, the Yellow Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Coral Sea.

The world's largest seas

The seas are classified according to their surface area in kilometers, and among the largest seas in the world are the following:

  • The Mediterranean Sea: The White Sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean, and it is surrounded by land on all sides. It includes some of the busiest shipping routes in the world, which makes it vulnerable to water pollution. Its area is 2,509,698 square kilometers.
  • Caribbean Sea: The Caribbean Sea is a tourist attraction; Because of the warmth of its water, which has a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius, and its low salinity when compared to the salinity of the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, this sea is considered a dangerous area for its volcanic and seismic activity, and its area is 2,514,878 square kilometers.
  • South China Sea: This sea includes an archipelago of small, uninhabited islands, with an area of 2,973,306 square kilometres. These islands constitute an area of conflict over ownership between neighboring countries.
  • Arabian Sea: It is considered part of the Indian Ocean, and is located between the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian Peninsula, and its coasts are supervised by India, Yemen, Somalia, the Maldives, Iran, Pakistan, and Oman, and its area is 3,861,672 square kilometers.
