What is the green sea?

The name “Green Sea” was given to the Arabian Gulf, due to the noticeable color of the ocean along the Arabian coast in particular. This Gulf originates in the west of the continent of Asia, where it is characterized by biological diversity and its richness in oil. It is located in the region that separates the Arabian Peninsula and Iran, and extends over a distance of approximately 615 miles long, and its area is about 97.000 square miles. The Arabian Gulf has many islands surrounding it, the deepest part of which is estimated to be only approximately 91 metres. It is overlooked by many countries, including the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, and Qatar. , Oman, and Iraq, and is known by several names, as it is called the Iranian Gulf and the Arabian Gulf.

Characteristics of the Arabian Gulf

The Arabian Gulf receives small amounts of sediments transported by rivers in the northwestern part, as this part contains many silts arriving from the Tigris, Euphrates, and Karun rivers, and many small river courses arriving from the Shatt al-Arabian Sea. The rivers and their sediments also originate in early summer. And spring, especially when the snow melts, and a few ephemeral currents form on the Iranian coast, and it is noted that there is no availability of any fresh water flowing across the Gulf on the Arab side, and winds and sand blow in the desert areas surrounding the Gulf, and produce many biological and vital processes, The chemical that helps produce calcium carbonate.

Habitats and biodiversity

The Arabian Gulf has many diverse marine habitats, including marine waters, coasts, wetlands, and inland river areas, in addition to the presence of coastal scrub, which is home to marine animals, such as: shrimp and crabs, in addition to insects and migratory birds. Dolphins, dugongs, local birds, whales and turtles, and there are approximately 700 different species of local fish, in addition to many coral reefs that provide refuge for aquatic life in the Gulf marine waters.
