What is the IELTS exam?

With the technological and cognitive development that life has witnessed in recent times, it has become necessary for a person to master many skills, whether it is a requirement in studying or an essential matter when applying for a job or work, and among the most important skills required nowadays are computer skills, skills Proficiency in some languages, the most important of which are English and French; Therefore, the trend has become to take exams to measure the ability of any person to perform these skills, and among the most famous and most prominent exams known worldwide:

  • (ICDL): It is a test that aims to measure the ability of individuals to work on computers.
  • (DELF): It is a test to measure the ability of individuals to master the French language.
  • (TOEFL): This is a test that measures the extent to which individuals proficiency in the English language.
  • (IELTS): It is also a test to measure individuals’ proficiency in the English language, which we will explain in detail in this article.

IELTS test

It is an abbreviation of the following words:

  • I: International
  • E:English
  • L: language
  • T:Testing
  • S:System

The full name means “International English Language Testing System” in Arabic.

This test is conducted to examine and test a person's ability in the English language and his proficiency in it. It is also considered one of the most important internationally recognized exams in many universities and government centers in the following countries: the United States of America, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa; It is recognized by more than 3800 public universities, and it occupies a global position in more than 120 countries in the world, and the tendency to apply this test began in 1989 AD; Because it had proven its efficiency as a means of measuring students' abilities in the English language.

The people who take this test are usually:

  • Students in their basic studies, or wishing to complete postgraduate studies.
  • People who want to take non-academic courses, or people who want to emigrate.

As for the nature of the exam, it is divided into four sections, and its duration is estimated at about two hours and forty-five minutes. The exam is distributed over a period ranging from 3-8 hours, and the exam sections are as follows:

  • The person presents the reading section, which is only one hour long.
  • The person presents the one-hour writing section as well.
  • After completing reading and writing, the person advances to the listening section, which lasts 30 minutes.
  • The last section to which the examinee progresses is the speaking section, which lasts 15 minutes.

The final exam mark for all sections is out of 9, i.e. the maximum mark a student can obtain is 9 out of 9, and the final exam mark is given in addition to the mark of each of the sections in detail.
