Medicinal uses of capers

The caper plant has been recorded in the Ayurvedic medical system as a tonic and protector of the liver, in addition to improving its performance. It has also been mentioned for its use in atherosclerosis, as a diuretic, as a kidney cleanser, as an anthelmintic, and as a tonic. There is insufficient evidence for its use for all of the following:

  • Diabetes.
  • Fungal infections.
  • Chest congestion.
  • Skin diseases caused by fungi.
  • skin diseases; If placed directly.
  • Improving blood flow near the surface of the skin; If placed directly.
  • Treating dry skin when applied directly.
  • Other cases; However, there must be other evidence to confirm the effectiveness of capers in treating these diseases.

There is not enough information to know whether capers are safe in therapeutic doses or not, but it is considered safe for most people if used as food. There is a possibility that capers may cause skin rashes and irritation. The following are special warnings for using capers:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Although the caper plant is believed to be safe to use as food, there is not enough information about whether it is safe to use in large quantities such as using it as a medicine, so it is preferable to use it in the quantities designated for food in the case of pregnancy and breastfeeding until additional quantities are obtained.
  • Diabetes: There is some suspicion that capers may change blood sugar control in diabetics, so blood sugar levels must be carefully monitored if you use capers and have diabetes.
  • surgeries: Since age may affect blood sugar levels, there is some suspicion that it may interfere with blood sugar control after surgery; Therefore, you must stop taking it for approximately two weeks before the operation.
