Fruit fly control methods

Fruit fly

The fruit fly is one of the two-winged insects, and it is one of the agricultural pests, as it parasitizes on fruit trees, causing them a lot of damage, and thus weakening their productivity. The female of this fly lays her eggs inside a hole located under the peel of the fruit, and when they hatch From these eggs, yellowish-white larvae emerge, and they feed on the pulp of the fruit, and thus the fruit weakens and falls from its mother. When these larvae grow somewhat and enter the pupal stage, they emerge from the fruit and enter the soil three centimeters from the soil surface, but the depth of the presence of the pupa depends. On soil type and moisture.

Methods of control of fruit flies

The fruit fly makes the fruit an easy prey for fungi, thus reducing the productivity and quality of the fruits produced by the tree. However, to protect the agricultural crop from damage, there is a set of rules and methods that completely eliminate this bad fly.

Traps

There are several types of traps that are effective in getting rid of fruit flies. The traps are:

  • Jackson's Trap: It is a pyramid made of cardboard coated with a waxy substance. This pyramid is mounted on a base coated with a very strong adhesive, and the base is also made of cardboard. A cotton dipped in toxic methyl substance must be removed from the head of the pyramid to attract the male peach fly, or With the toxic substance Trimidlor to attract males of the Mediterranean fruit.
  • McPhail's trap: It is a plastic or glass container in which the compound diammonium phosphate is placed. This substance is attractive to this type of fly.

It should be noted that these traps must be hung about two weeks before the fruit ripens, and it is best to hang these traps in the shaded areas inside the tree, where flies are densely present.

Chemical control

  • Pick the fruits that contain the eggs of this insect, put them in tightly sealed bags, and place these bags directly under the sunlight, in order to completely get rid of this insect, and then bury the fruits in the soil to become organic fertilizer for plants.
  • Bury fallen fruits, which contain fruit fly eggs, to a depth of thirty to fifty centimetres. This method works to kill this insect in all its stages, whether they are eggs, larvae or pupae.
  • Plow the soil superficially, and make sure to rid it of harmful weeds. This method hinders the growth and development of the pupae, that is, the second stage of this insect, and thus destroys it. Likewise, irrigating trees with large amounts of water, as this method leads to the suffocation of the pupae of this fly.
  • Make sure to collect fruits early.
  • Planting one type of fruit tree in the orchard.
