computer performance

The performance of a computer depends on several factors, including what is related to the hardware of the device itself; That is, the speed of performance of the pieces in it and the extent of their efficiency in communicating with each other, including what is related to its health in general; As the computer needs regular maintenance to keep it working at the best performance, and among the forms of maintenance is cleaning it from unnecessary files, constantly updating its software, and so on.

Correction of storage media cracks

The occurrence of cracks in the hard disk partitions (in English: Fragmentation) is normal with the continuous use of the computer; As the data in the storage medium becomes scattered and untidy, knowing that this matter is not visible to the user, but there is special software to detect and correct this problem (in English: Defragmentation). The Windows operating system (in English: Windows) provides commands to detect and correct storage media partition cracks, if any, and they can be used through the Command Prompt as follows:

  • To run the command prompt, type (cmd) in the search field on the Start menu, then right-click on the (Command Prompt) icon, and choose Run as administrator.
  • Typing the command (Defrag /c), and then pressing the Enter button on the keyboard, and thus the process of correcting cracks will begin in all partitions of the storage medium.
It is possible to correct the cracks of a specific partition of the storage medium, by typing the command (Defrag) followed by the letter that symbolizes the partition. For example, to perform a scan of the partition (:C), the command (:Defrag C) is entered.

Detect damaged parts of the hard drive

Because the hard disk has a specific age, and after a period of use, parts of it called sectors begin to deteriorate, and thus become unusable for storing data in it, which may cause many problems such as the device stopping responding suddenly ( In English: Freezing), or the appearance of messages indicating that an error has occurred (in English: Error messages), or simply a decrease in the performance of the device.

The command (chkdsk) can be used in the Windows operating system to scan one of the hard disk partitions and detect any problems in it, and this is done as follows:

  • To run the command prompt, type (cmd) in the search field on the Start menu, then right-click on the Command Prompt icon, and choose Run as administrator.
  • Writing the command (chkdsk) followed by the letter that symbolizes the partition to be erased, for example, if the partition to be erased is (:C), then the command (:chkdsk c) is entered.
  • Press the Enter button on the keyboard, and thus the scanning process will start, and upon completion, its results will appear.

The chkdsk software enables correcting errors that are detected by scanning. This is done by adding (f/) before writing the name of the section; For example, to correct errors in partition (:C), the command (:chkdsk /fc) is invoked.

Detection of damaged operating system files

Damage to some operating system files may affect the performance of the computer, and damaged files can be detected through the (sfc) command as follows:

  • To run the command prompt, type (cmd) in the search field on the Start menu, then right-click on the Command Prompt icon, and choose Run as administrator.
  • Type the command (sfc /scannow), and then press the Enter button on the keyboard.

Other factors that affect the performance of a computer

Computer hardware

Computer hardware includes all of the following:

  • Healer: The speed of the central processing unit (in English: CPU) is one of the most important factors affecting the performance of a computer. In many cases, the computer processor is likened to the human brain for it, and in general, the speed of the processor or what is known as its frequency; That is, the number of cycles that are executed per second, indicates the performance of this processor, and the increase in the number of cores in it increases the ability of the device to carry out several tasks at the same time.
In addition to the speed of the processor, it contains a very fast small memory called cache, which is the memory in which program instructions and data that are frequently used by the CPU are stored, so the larger the capacity of this memory, the greater the amount of data that can be used. stored in them and processed by the processor.
  • memory: One of the important factors that have a significant impact on the performance of a computer is the random access memory (in English: RAM), which is the memory in which data is stored temporarily, and this memory is faster than other storage media such as the hard disk, so, after the processor searches the cache for The data it needs, it searches in the random access memory, and if it does not find it in it, then it resorts to searching in the hard disk, which is the slowest speed compared to the cache memory and random access memory, and in general, the greater the capacity of the random access memory in addition to its speed, the better the performance of the device the computer as a whole.
  • Hard Disk: Since the hard drive is the third storage memory that the processor resorts to to search for the data it needs, so its performance has a significant impact on the performance of the computer, and in general, the higher the capacity and speed of the hard drive, the better the performance of the computer. This is because the speed of data retrieval from it will be faster.

Computer status and health

There are several reasons that are not related to the efficiency of computer hardware only, which lead to a decrease in the performance of the device in general, and among these reasons are the following:

  • The presence of many programs that run immediately after the start of the operating system (in English: Startup programs), and a specialist in the field of computer maintenance, Aaron Scheffler, considered that this reason is one of the most common causes of low computer performance; As most of the software installed on the device tries to start working when it is turned on, and many of these programs continue to work in secret even when the operating system finishes the startup stage.
  • The storage space is full, which causes the inability of various programs to create the temporary files they need to work with the required efficiency, which affects the performance of the operating system.
  • Hard disk damage (in English: Hard disk); Since the hard disk contains mechanical parts that work continuously, these pieces may be damaged after a period of use. The hard disk differs from the solid-state storage medium (in English: SSD) in this regard; As the latter does not work using moving mechanical parts, which makes it able to withstand 8-10 years without problems, unlike the hard drive, whose life span is estimated at two to three years of continuous use.
  • The user runs many programs simultaneously, which causes the consumption of processor power, in addition to the random memory capacity.
  • the presence of a malicious program (virus) in the system; As many of these malicious programs consume the power of the device; Because it carries out its harmful tasks throughout the operating period of the device, and examples of these tasks are: showing ads, hacking a web browser, or otherwise.
  • Using a heavy anti-virus program on the device, one of the anti-virus programs is what scans the entire device on a weekly basis, and it requires several hours to finish it, which slows down the speed of doing business; Because this survey is in secret while doing other work.
  • device overheating; due to poor ventilation and cooling.
