About planet Earth

This planet is the only one that is home to millions of living organisms, from the smallest organisms that we can only see with a microscope, all the way to the largest and largest creatures, such as huge animals such as the elephant and the whale, because of the characteristics it possesses that make it a refuge that includes all creatures, such as its suitable distance. From the sun, the presence of an atmosphere that protects it, the presence of water on its surface, as well as the presence of oxygen necessary for the breathing of living organisms, and perhaps man is one of the most important and most influential living organisms on the surface of the Earth and the rest of the organisms.

Man is naturally possessed by curiosity, so he always seeks to discover everything new about the universe in which he lives and to know how it originated, the phenomena that occur in it, and many things. But the most important thing man seeks to know is to know everything related to the planet he lives on, which is planet Earth. .

How to calculate the diameter of the Earth

We find that man is always searching for everything related to the planet Earth. The first beliefs that appeared regarding the planet Earth were that it was a square planet in shape, and some of them said that it was rectangular in shape, and some of them believed that it was flat, but scientists and thinkers did not believe that, so they sought with all the effort and information they had. To conclude that the Earth is spherical in shape, and after great effort and long struggle, they were able to convince people that the Earth is spherical. With the passage of time, scientists were able to conclude that the Earth is not completely round and its spherical percentage is 99.997%, as it is flattened at the poles, and indented at the equator.

But how were scientists able to calculate the diameter of the Earth? The discovery of the sphericity of the Earth opened the way for scientists to calculate its area and the length of its diameter. If the Earth were flat, it would be very difficult to calculate its area, because it would take them a huge amount of time to figure out what its shape is, whether it is square, rectangular, or It is triangular in shape, and here they will need a lot of data and equations to calculate its area, while the spherical shape can easily calculate its area, because scientists here only need two data, which are the length of the Earth's circle of maximum breadth, and also knowledge of the Earth's radius.

Radius of the Earth

Here, knowing the radius of the Earth while we are on it is impossible, so scientists resorted to measuring the length of the Earth's circle of maximum breadth, and this circle was the equator, and they found that its length is approximately 40000 km, and they concluded that the Earth's radius is equal to the radius of that Earth. The circle, and they were able to calculate the radius through the following mathematical relationship:

By substituting the previous relationship, we find that:

q = 40000 ÷ 3.14 ÷ 2 = approximately 6370

To get the full diameter of the Earth, we multiply the radius by 2, which results in us that the diameter of the Earth is approximately 12740 km.
