The Yellow Sea is located between China on the northern and western sides and the Korean Peninsula on the eastern side. It is located in the north of the East China Sea, and forms the entrance to the Pacific Ocean. Its length is about 960 kilometers from north to south and about 700 kilometers from east to west, and its total area is 380.000 kilometers. It is square, and its average depth is 44 metres, while its maximum depth is 152 metres. It extends from the mouth of the Yangtze River in China to Jeju Island in South Korea. The sea is also known as Hwang Hai, and there are several islands in it, the most important of which are: Wando Island and Jeju, Moido Island, and Pyeongdo Island. The Yellow Sea was given this name because of the sand that the Hwangho River carries to it from the Gobi Desert. Therefore, its water became golden yellow.
