Education in Costa Rica

Costa Rica's literacy rate is 94.9%, one of the highest in Latin America. When the army was abolished in 1949, it was said that the army would be replaced with an army of teachers. Costa Rica has primary and secondary schools throughout the country. The Constitution guarantees the right to education for all. Primary and secondary education is compulsory and free. There are only a few schools in Costa Rica where students go beyond the twelfth grade. Students who complete the eleventh grade receive a baccalaureate diploma accredited by the Costa Rican Ministry of Education.

There are public and private universities in Costa Rica, and public universities are considered the best in the country, as well as one of the best means of social mobility, given that a large percentage of the budget is spent to support students from poor families.
