Palestinian coastal plains

The Palestinian coastal plains extend along the shore of the Mediterranean Sea for a length of 244 km. It begins from the northern side, specifically from the Ras Naqoura area, and ends on the southern side at the city of Rafah. It is noteworthy that the coastal plains narrow in the north and begin to expand as they go to the south. The percentage of these plains is 13 % of the total area of ​​Palestine, examples of which are:

  • Akka Plain: It is located in the far north of Palestine. Its length reaches 42 kilometers, its width ranges from (6-12 kilometers), its area is 316 square kilometers, and its height above sea level ranges from (100-150 meters).
  • Carmel Plain: It extends from Ras al-Carmel to Atlit at the course of the Alexandretta River. Its length is 35 kilometers, while its area reaches 70 square kilometers.
  • The Southern Coastal Plain: It extends from the head of Mount Carmel, near Haifa, to the city of Rafah. Its area is estimated at 3220 square kilometers, its length is 147 kilometers, and its width ranges from (20 - 35 kilometers), and it expands in the south to reach 50 kilometers in width at Gaza City.

The Palestinian internal plains

Palestine consists of internal plains, including the following:

  • Marj Ibn Amer Plain: The shape of this plain resembles a triangle, and its edges are represented by Haifa, Jenin, and Tiberias. Its length is 40 kilometers and its width is 19 kilometers, while its total area reaches 351 square kilometers.
  • Hattin Plain: This plain is located in the Lower Galilee Plateau. The Hattin Plain witnessed the Battle of Hattin in which Saladin defeated the Crusaders.
  • Al-Batuf Plain: This plain separates the mountains of the Upper Galilee from the mountains of the lower Galilee. Its length is 15 kilometers, and its width ranges from (3 - 5 kilometers), while its area is 52 square kilometers.
