Iraqi industries

The industry in Iraq is considered one of the traditional industries that were and still are linked to the oil industry. As oil refining, fertilizer industry and chemical industries are the main industries in the country.

Types of industries in Iraq

Industries in the Republic of Iraq are divided into two main parts, as follows:

  • Extractive industries: It means any industries that depend on the extraction of petroleum and natural gas, in addition to minerals such as: sulfur mineral found in the areas of Al-Kayara and Al-Mishraq, as well as phosphate extracted from western Anbar from the Akashat region.
  • Manufacturing industries: they can be divided into the following:
    • Food: including the dairy industry; Where there is a factory for the production of various types of milk and its derivatives in the Abu Ghraib area in the western side of Baghdad, and there are also other factories in several regions such as Nineveh, and a factory in Basra, Al-Jazeera and Babil, but the problem is that the production of these factories is only sufficient for 15% of the state’s needs, and from The food industry also manufactures food oils; Where the General Company for Oil Industries carries out this industry, and it has 4 factories, three of which are in Baghdad and a factory in the Amarah area. Where these factories produce edible oils of various kinds, which are made from sunflower seeds, but the level of production in them is low and weak compared to oils imported from Turkey and Iran. Also, the food industry includes the sugar industry. Where the sugar made in Iraq is distinguished as one of the finest and purest types of sugar, as this factory is located in the Mosul region, in addition to the canned food industry, the beverage industry, and the water filtration factories.
    • Leather and textile industries, and among these industries we mention: the manufacture of cotton fabric and spinning, woolen fabric, silk fabric, the manufacture of leather, carpets, rugs, ready-made clothes, and others.
    • Building materials industries: including the cement industry, which is considered the strongest and oldest industries in Iraq, which began in the early fifties. There are many cement factories that are spread in each of the Anbar Governorate, Nineveh Governorate, Sulaymaniyah, Badoush, Karbala Governorate, Muthanna Governorate, and Basra, as well as the brick industry and other building materials.
    • Chemical industries: including petrochemicals; Such as the liquefied gas industry and the refining industry, as well as the chemical fertilizer industry, which is of medium importance; There are only two factories in Iraq for these industries, and there is also the manufacture of cleaning materials, the glass industry, the paper industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and batteries.
