The rule of Omar bin Abdul Aziz

He is Omar bin Abdul Aziz Al-Umawi Al-Qurashi, his nickname is Abu Hafs, and he is the eighth Umayyad caliph. He is called the fifth Rightly Guided Caliph. His grandfather is Caliph Omar bin Al-Khattab. He received his education and the fundamentals of religion at the hands of Saleh bin Kaysan in Medina. His uncle is Caliph Abdul Malik bin Marwan and his wife Fatima bint Abdul Malik. Ibn Marwan has many wisdoms and stories with lessons. I will mention some of his wisdom here.

  • He mentioned death more often. If you were in difficulty in living, he expanded it upon you, and said: O people, improve your secrets and your public affairs will be corrected, and work for your hereafter to be sufficient for your worldly life. And a man said to him, “Advise me.” He said: “I advise you to fear God and prefer Him. The hardship will be lightened for you and God’s help will be good for you.” And he said to Omar bin Hafs: If you hear a word from a Muslim, do not burden it with any evil as long as you find it to be supported by goodness. And he said: He who is protected from dissent has succeeded. And anger and greed - and he said: Whoever counts his words as part of his actions, his words will be less.
  • I advise you to fear God, who does not accept anything else, has mercy only on its people, and rewards only those who commit it, for those who preach it are many, but those who practice it are few.
  • Avoid being preoccupied with the presence of prayer, for whoever misses it is more wasteful than other rituals of Islam.
  • Omar bin Abdul Aziz - may God Almighty have mercy on him - said: Whoever wants to accompany us, let him accompany us with five things:
  • He communicates to us the needs of those whose needs do not reach us, and guides us to justice towards what we are not guided to, and helps us in following the truth, and performs trustworthiness to us and to people, and he does not backbite anyone with us.

Then he said: Whoever does not do so is embarrassed to be with us and enter upon us. I am not the best of you, but I am a man among you, except that God has made me the heaviest of you.
