The importance of afforestation in improving the environment

Air purification

Trees help purify the air and improve its quality. They act as filters that purify the air from all impurities such as smoke, dust, and vapors from the atmosphere, by trapping and collecting them in their leaves, twigs, and branches. For example, beech forests help absorb four tons of dust. Found in the atmosphere every year, trees also help reduce the effect of global warming by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releasing oxygen.

Reduce air temperature

Planting trees helps reduce the air temperature by blocking the rays the sunFurther cooling occurs when water evaporates from the surface of leaves the treesAs the process of converting water into water vapor is a chemical process that removes thermal energy from the air, one tree can work as a natural air conditioner, as evaporation from one tree can produce the same cooling effect from 10 room-sized air conditioners that operate for 20 hours during the day.

Other benefits of planting trees

There is another group of benefits of afforestation on the environment, which are as follows:

  • Contributing to reduced soil erosion, and thus the ability to cultivate.
  • Contributing to keeping insects, animals, and birds in their place, which leads to improving the biodiversity of the area.
  • Preventing water runoff, thus seeping into the soil, reaching the aquifers underground, and improving water supplies for living organisms.
  • Absorbing harmful gases from the air such as carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide, in addition to releasing oxygen gas, as one huge tree can supply four people with oxygen for one day.
  • Reducing the soil temperature, in addition to losing its moisture as well, as the decomposition of leaves enhances the presence of microorganisms in the soil, thus providing the necessary nutrients for tree growth.
