There are very few insecticides designed to eliminate insects that infest houseplants, which can be purchased from online stores or from plant nurseries, and it is preferable to use species that contain one of the following active substances:

  • pyrethrins: Pyrethrins are used to eliminate mealybugs, aphids, whiteflies, and thrips, and it is used by spraying it directly on insects.
  • Potassium fatty acids: Potassium fatty acids are sold as a type of pesticide, but it is cautioned against mixing homemade products. Because this may cause damage to the plant and its burning, and potassium fatty acids are used by spraying them directly on insects to kill them, and use them several times to obtain the desired results.
  • vegetable oil extracts: These oils are used to kill both aphids, spider mites, and white flies by spraying them on the insect in an abundant amount in order to suffocate it. Examples of these extracts are: cloves, garlic, sesame, and cotton seeds.
  • Neem oil: Neem oil is used to eliminate white flies, aphids, and thrips, by disrupting their growth, and it may take days or weeks before eliminating them completely, and it must be used frequently to be able to eliminate plant pests.

The white worm appears in the soil of houseplants sometimes, and although it does not cause any harm to the soil, it may harm the plants, and it can be disposed of by following the following:

  • Biologically attacking larvae by adding mites or nematodes to the soil; Moths kill more than seven larvae per day when they turn into adult moths, and water must be added to the soil when using nematodes in order to help them kill the larvae.

How to eliminate mealybugs in houseplants

Mealybugs are considered among the pests that infect domestic plants, and their presence can be identified by observing the presence of a white cotton-like cover on the leaves and branches of plants, and this cover usually contains vesicles of mealybugs or the bugs themselves, and if it is noticed that it appears on plants, it must be isolated on immediately, and try to remove the white cover from it by following the following:

  • Mix one part alcohol with three parts water in a bowl, and add a few drops of bleach-free dishwashing liquid to it.
  • Use the resulting solution to wash all parts of the affected plant, leave it on it for several days, and repeat the process as needed.
Note: Neem oil and insecticides can be used to eliminate mealybugs on plants, and there may be a need to use more than one method to get rid of them, as they are difficult to eradicate.
