Passwords can be classified into two types depending on the complexity of the password, some of which are strong, and some are weak. Strong passwords are usually difficult to hack, and consist of a relatively large number of symbols, in addition to these symbols including a mixture of numbers and letters (lowercase and uppercase in the case of the English language), and other types of symbols. On the other hand, there are weak passwords, which usually refer to phrases that can be guessed, such as names, dates of birth, or phone numbers; Which makes it easy to guess and memorize.

in Windows operating system

The user password in the Windows operating system (in English: Windows) is not considered a strong way to protect user data. However, it is sufficient to provide simple protection for the computer and prevent unauthorized persons from using it, and it does not allow anyone who does not have an administrative user (in English: Administrator) in the operating system to install various software or make certain modifications to the system.

Windows 8 or 10

To create a password in Windows 8 or 10 operating system, the following steps are followed:

  • Entering the Control Panel (in English: Control Panel), and this can be done through the menu that can be accessed by pressing the “Windows” button and the letter “X” at the same time on the keyboard, then pressing Settings (in English: Settings).
  • Click on “User Accounts” if the version of Windows used is 10, and if the version is 8, then click on “User Accounts and Family Safety”.
  • Click on “User Accounts”.
  • Choose “Make changes to my account in PC settings”, and then click on “Sign-in options” on the left of the window.
  • Click on the “Add” button at the bottom of the “Password” section.
  • Enter the desired password in the first two fields that appear on the screen, and then enter a hint phrase in the “Password hint” field to remind the user of it in case it is forgotten.
  • Click on the “Next” button, then the “Finish” button to end the process.

Windows Vista or 7

To create a password in the Windows Vista operating system (in English: Windows Vista) or Windows 7, the following steps are followed:

  • Enter the control panel by pressing the “Start” button and then “Control Panel”.
  • In the case of using Windows 7, then clicking on “User Accounts and Family Safety”, and in the case of using Windows Vista, then clicking on “User Accounts”.
  • Click on “User Accounts”.
  • Click on the “Create a password for your account” link under the “Make changes to your user account” section.
  • Enter the desired password in the first two input fields, and then enter a useful hint phrase in the “Password hint” field to remind the user of the password in case it is forgotten.
  • Click on the “Create password” button to complete the process.

Windows XP

To create a password in the Windows XP operating system; The following steps are taken:

  • Enter the control panel by pressing the “Start” button, then “Control Panel”.
  • Click on the “User Accounts” link or its icon if the selected control panel format is “Classic View”.
  • Click on the username of the account for which you want to create a password, under the phrase “Pick an account to change”.
  • Click on the “Create a password” link.
  • Enter the desired password in the first two fields, and then press the “Create Password” button to confirm the process.
  • After completing the password entry, the user will be taken to a screen asking him if he wants to make the files allocated to his account private so that they are hidden from other users. If the user wants that, he presses the “Yes, Make Private” button. He wishes to press the “No” button.

in Linux operating system

To change the password or create a new one in the Linux operating system (in English: Linux), the “passwd” command is used for that. In the event that the user wants to change the password for his account, the following steps are followed:

  • Enter the “Terminal” option immediately from the desktop, or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T, which works in most Linux distributions.
  • Enter the command “passwd”.
  • Enter the current password, if any, and if the user entered it incorrectly, the process will be cancelled.
  • Enter the new password and then re-enter it again to confirm it, after which the system will check the strength of the new password.

In the event that the user wants to change the password for another account, he must first enter the system with the “root” account, and then enter the “passwd” command, followed by the name of the user whose account password he wants to change, after that the same previous steps are followed, noting that in this case The current password will not be asked, but it will be changed immediately (because the account used for the process is “root”).

The computer user can add a password that will be asked for immediately after turning on the device, and this password is set through the basic input and output system (in English: BIOS), by following the following steps:

  • Restart the computer, and then press the button designated to enter the “BIOS” system as soon as it starts, and the “Delete” or “F1” or “F2” buttons are usually used for that.
  • Go to the option to set a password for the computer; Where the name of this option may differ according to the type of computer, but usually the name is “User Password”, “System Password”, “Power-on Password”, or “System Security”, after which the “Enter” button is pressed through the keyboard.
  • The password is activated using the arrow buttons on the keyboard, or using the “+” and “-” buttons, so that the option designated for that may be called “System Password”, “Startup Password”, or “HDD Password”, and its state is converted to "Active" or "Enabled".
  • A window will appear for the user to enter the new password. It must be entered twice, and then confirm the process by choosing “Confirm”, “Enable”, “Save Password”, or “Yes”.
  • From the “BIOS” system menu, select “Save Changes” or “Save Changes and Exit”. Thus, the changes will be saved and the computer will be restarted, and the user will be asked for the new password.
