How can gold be distinguished?

magnet test

The magnet test helps distinguish between real and fake gold, as a person can bring a strong magnet close to a piece of jewelry. If this piece is attracted, it is not real gold. It is also recommended to perform this test along with other tests to examine the purity of gold. Because it is not the only non-magnetic metal.

Acid test

The acid test helps distinguish real gold from counterfeit. This test can be performed using a set of testing tools that consist of a group of acid solutions, in addition to a gold tester, which is a stone used to determine the value of gold, where different types of solutions are used depending on the karat to be examined. The piece of gold to be examined is scratched by it, leaving a mark on the stone. Then another real piece of gold of the same caliber as the first piece of gold is scratched, and the karat-specific acid solution is placed on both scratches, and then the resulting chemical reactions are compared.

Buoyancy test

A cup of water can be used to determine the purity of a piece of gold. All a person has to do is bring the piece of gold to be examined, then put it in a cup of water. If it sinks to the bottom immediately, it is real gold, but if it floats on the surface of the water or sinks near the bottom, it is considered counterfeit gold, and it is worth noting that real gold does not change color, and does not rust when wet.

Skin test

The change in skin color when wearing a piece of gold jewelry indicates its purity. A person can perform this test to verify the purity of that piece by keeping it in the hand for a few minutes until sweat forms on the skin and reacts chemically with the gold. If the skin color changes to Black or green, then the piece of gold is fake, but if it is real gold, it will not interact with the skin, and will not change its color.

Electronic gold testing devices

Goldsmiths use electronic gold testing devices to determine the quality of a piece of gold, using a specific liquid or gel. They first create an electrical circuit between the device’s probe and the piece of gold, then the device tests the electrical conductivity of that piece. This feature helps test whether the piece of gold is real. Or not, in addition to testing their purity. These devices are considered fairly accurate when used correctly, so it is recommended to clean them of gel completely between uses.
