Tournament system

The Champions League is held every 4 years between the member states of the European Football Association (UEFA), and its system is based on what is known as the group league, which may differ in the way it is implemented from one season to another depending on the number of participating teams, as follows:

  • In the 1992-1993 season, which is considered the first for the tournament, 8 teams qualified for the tournament after all participating teams were eliminated, and then they were divided into two main groups, each of which included 4 clubs, so that they competed with each other to reach the winning team in each group. Then, the two qualified teams will compete for the championship in the final match.
  • In the 1997-1998 season of the league, the number of participating teams was increased, reaching 24 teams after the elimination and qualification stage, which were divided into 6 groups, so that the winning teams from each group competed in 3 stages, in which the loser was eliminated from the competition.
  • In the 1999-2000 season, the tournament included 32 teams after the qualifying stage. They were divided into 8 groups, then the first group stage was followed by a second group stage as well, and in the end the winning teams from each group competed for the championship.
  • In the 2014-2015 season, the qualified teams were divided into groups within one stage only, as the second group stage was canceled in this season.
