How do I play Tarneeb?

Tarneeb is one of the very famous card games in the Levant, especially in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is the card game in which young people spend most of their time at family evenings and friends’ parties. This wonderful, enthusiastic game is played with the participation of four players, as this is the specified number, and the number may not be less or more than that. The game is based on the principle of partnership, where two players opposite each other are partners in play, as there is no individual play in it like other games, so the two partners form one team, so if one of them wins, the other wins with him and vice versa.

Tarneeb is played with one piece of playing cards (Shaddah) with all its fifty-two (52) cards. No card is excluded except the joker cards. As there is no place for them in this game. The game begins by determining where the partners should sit opposite each other. The playing cards are shuffled well by one of the players. Then he places the entire card in his left hand so that the player sitting to his left from the opposing team either cuts off part of the cards and places them at the bottom. Or he asks the player to distribute the cards in a specific way, such as for the opponents to take the pile of cards in the middle, the first, or the last, or any method that this player deems appropriate for him, so the player responds to his request and begins distributing the cards. Each player is dealt thirteen (13) playing cards, which are dealt as one consecutive suit from top to bottom; Until everyone has playing cards, the game begins immediately.

The Tarneeb game is based on two principles. The first is the principle of the strongest color, which is called Tarneeb. From him, the name of this game was taken. The second is the principle of grouping what is called in the colloquial dialect “foods”, since in each round of play the players throw one card, and whoever throws the strongest card is the one who “eats” this round, so it is counted as one for him. As for tarneeb, it is the strongest suit of playing cards in each game. After the cards are distributed, the player sees which suit is stronger. He requests a certain number of “foods” based on the strength of his ball, and the request begins with the player to the right of the one who distributes the cards, and the minimum number that the player can request is seven; The highest of them is “kapot,” meaning that the team collects all the food for themselves. Without leaving any room for opponents to get anything from them. The player who cannot ask; So he asks for a bus, meaning he abandons his request because his ball does not help him venture out. When one of the players requests a number; The next player must overtake him or ask for a “bus” if he does not think he can overcome him.

When agreeing to the higher number of dishes; The player making the request begins play by specifying the type of his tarneeb with the first card he throws. It is not required that he start playing with the tarneeb; But the condition is to specify it first. Play is based on the strength of the card, and the tarneeb is the strongest card. If one of the players throws a card and wins; Then the opponent threw a tarneeb card. The owner of the tarneeb will be the winner of that meal. Points are calculated by collecting the meals for both parties. If a team requests a number and brings it or higher than it; The number is recorded in its favor and the second team does not get any point. If it fails, The original value is deducted from the points he collected. The number of meals for the opposing team is added as additional points. There is no specific time or minimum number of playing times. The game ends when one of the two teams accumulates sixty-three (63) points. Or obtaining thirty-one (31) points in the negative.
