How are diamonds formed?

Diamond

It is one of the types of gemstones known to mankind since ancient times, as it was used as a type of jewelry and used in decorative works. Diamonds have several properties and advantages, such as their hardness and ability to scatter light, which earned them fame and made them a destination for the jewelry industry and other industrial applications.

How diamonds are formed

Pressure and very high temperatures are the basic conditions for forming diamonds. These environmental conditions exist in limited areas 90 miles, or 150 km, below the surface of the Earth, where the temperature reaches 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1050 degrees Celsius. This is sufficient to reshape crystalline carbon. It is called graphite, from hexagonal to triangular in shape, and it is diamond. Diamonds come out to the surface of the Earth through pipes of sulphurlite and lamparite that result from volcanic eruptions. It is worth noting that only one out of two hundred tubes contains pure, high-quality diamonds.

History of diamonds

In the fourth century BC, the first diamonds were discovered in India. They were noted for their great difference from volcanic rocks. They believed that they were gifts from the gods that would bring health, wealth, and power. Since then, diamonds have gained great importance, and their many uses have become one of the most famous gemstones to this day.

Uses of diamonds

The uses of diamonds extend beyond the jewelry industry, as it has been used in many fields such as:

الصحة

According to a recent study conducted by South Wales College, diamond particles a thousand times smaller than a human hair (Nanodiamonds) are used to help treat cancer by attaching them to chemotherapy, as the cancer cell gets rid of the chemotherapy if it reaches it and does not give it the necessary time for treatment. But with the addition of particles, they do not have the ability to get rid of the diamond, and therefore the treatment remains inside them.

teeth medicine

Diamonds are used in dental cavity drilling tools, as diamond particles are placed on the heads of the tools to enhance their abrasive properties.

Industrial applications

Due to the strength and hardness of diamond, it has become an expensive and effective choice in the world of manufacturing industrial tools, such as: cutting, polishing, and drilling. Its particles have also been used in the oils of some equipment to make them stronger.

Computers

Diamond is characterized by its resistance to heat, as it can be cooled five times lower than the silicon used in computers and can withstand a higher electrical potential, which makes the electrical current in computers more efficient.
