Methods of taking body measurements

There are many basic measurements that must be taken and measured accurately for various parts of the body, including the following:

Measure the upper body

Measurements of the upper body include the chest, shoulders, and back area. It is preferable to measure these parts using a flexible cloth tape instead of a metal one, so that it is loose and comfortable. To facilitate movement and measurement accurately, and to avoid slipping, in addition to the necessity of recording the measurements on an external notebook immediately after completing the part; To ensure that they are not forgotten or mixed together, the measurement is done as follows:

  • Measure the shoulder areaSome people may find it difficult to take measurements of this area. Due to the difficulty of moving the tape without it bending or slipping, it is therefore advisable to enlist the help of another person in the household during the process, so that he begins by placing the tape at the end of one shoulder, then pulling it towards the other shoulder and going around the person until the other side, and meeting at the starting point again, but The tape should be very close to the shoulder to ensure an accurate measurement of the widest point of the shoulders.
  • Measure the circumference of the chest areaA person must stand upright to measure the chest circumference correctly, as he will need to measure the largest part of this area, which represents what is below the shoulders, that is, under the armpit for men, and the area slightly to the side of the chest for women, where he will begin by placing the tip of the tape at the starting point and walking with it to wrap around the chest. The back, loosening the tape and not tightening it at the prominent chest area for girls, while continuing to circle around to reach the starting area until the tape meets its first end.
  • Chest length measurement Chest length is measured from two directions, as follows:
    • Chest to shoulder length: by fixing the measuring meter on the middle of the shoulder area at the top, then pulling it straight down towards the chest area until it reaches its middle.
    • Chest to waist length: by fixing the measurement meter on the mid-chest area that was stopped in the previous step, then pulling it straight down towards the waist circumference area, then recording the resulting measurements.

Measuring the middle area of ​​the body

The middle area of ​​the body includes the length of the back and the waist circumference, each of which is measured in the following way:

  • Back Length: The length of the back is measured by placing the measuring meter at the point where the person's neck meets his back, then it is extended in a straight longitudinal manner, passing through the spine towards the bottom, reaching the middle of the lower waist circumference area mentioned before.
  • waistline: It is preferable to wear suitable clothing to measure the waist circumference accurately, so that it is very thin and does not take an excessive measurement. It is also preferable to take the measurement without wearing any clothing in this area. To obtain a better and more accurate result, the measurement includes taking dimensions of different parts of this area to obtain a correct result, which is:
    • Natural waist measurement: which includes the smallest point in the waist area, which is located slightly below the chest, and approximately 5 cm from the belly button area (the navel). It is measured by fixing the tape on one side of the small waist, then pulling it taut so that it wraps around the waist, passing through the back from behind. Until returning to the meeting point.
    • Lower waist measurement: It is the wide part of the waist located below the belly button (navel) in the pelvic area. It is measured in the same way as the previous waist measurement, but the starting point here will start from the wide waist area.
    • Measuring the longitudinal distance between the waist and the lower middle: Given the difference in measurements between the two areas, it is possible to measure the longitudinal distance between them when you want to tailor the clothes with appropriate dimensions and sizes by fixing the measurement meter in the middle of the upper natural waist area above the navel and pulling downward until reaching the middle of the lower middle line below the navel.

Measurement of the lower body

This area represents the part below the waist, and is measured as follows:

  • Pelvic circumference: The measuring meter is installed in the widest part of the pelvic area, then it is wrapped taut across the back area from behind until it reaches the starting point and meets the end of the first tape.
  • Thigh area measurements: This area is measured from several parts as follows:
    • Thigh (hip) circumference: This is done by wrapping the measuring meter around the thigh at its widest point until the ends of its two tapes meet and recording the measurement.
    • Hips length: It is measured by fixing the measuring meter at the midpoint between the bottom of the buttocks muscles to the back of the knee, or the widest part of the thigh down to the knee.

Measurement of limbs

A person needs to take the measurements of his upper and lower limbs accurately and add them to the rest of the measurements to determine his body size. This includes the following limbs:

  • Arm circumference: It is measured by identifying the widest area in the upper arm, then wrapping the measuring meter around it so that its two ends meet and recording the read measurement.
  • Arm Length: The arm length is measured by the person standing upright and relaxed, then placing the measuring meter on the shoulder bone located next to the neck and pulling it straight along the arm up to the elbow of the hand.
  • Leg circumference: The circumference of the lower leg is measured in the area known as the calves by choosing the widest point in the muscle just below the knee, tightening the tape and wrapping it around it all the way to its beginning.
  • Lower leg length: The length of the lower leg is measured starting from the knee area by pulling the measuring meter up to the foot cuff area from the bottom. The lower leg can be measured with the hips at the top to calculate the total leg length, starting from the point of measuring the hips that was explained before and ending with the foot cuff to obtain a complete measurement in The desire to detail the clothes precisely prevents the division of these parts.
