Arabic kohl
It is a hand-made antimony stone, and it is one of the finest types. This stone is the best type found in the country of Hijaz and Isfahan. Chemically, it is the element antimony, and its symbol in the periodic table is Sb. It is a semi-metal that is fragile, quickly crumbles, and shiny.
Ithmid in Islam is considered one of the kohls of the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, and his companions. On the authority of Ibn Abbas, the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Use kohl with anti-corrosion, for it clears the sight and makes the hair grow.” Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi. Using kohl is a preferred sunnah for men and women alike, and one of the sunnahs of kohl is to start with the right eye and apply kohl in each eye three times.
Making Arabic kohl
There are several ways in which Arabic kohl is made, and we will discuss them in this article.
Method 1
- Bring antimony stone, which is the best type for making Arabic kohl, and place it in an empty pot or pan.
- Add the pits of both olives and dates, a few cloves and black pepper, and drops of olive oil.
- Place the pot on the fire, and start stirring the mixture until the ingredients start to crackle, then turn off the fire.
- Crush these ingredients with a mortar while they are hot until they become very fine, then use a piece of gauze to sift the fine powder.
- Collect the results of the sifting and put it in a box designated for kohl, known as the kohl, and use a wooden stick to dip it in the kohl and pass it inside your eyes, known as the kohl.
