It is also considered one of the most famous rivers located in that important continent. This river was known in ancient times among Muslim and Arab historians as the Sanhaja River. The Senegal River is considered a natural border between Senegal and Mauritania. However, this river did not prevent the inhabitants of both banks of the river from meeting with each other, so their cooperation increased in various fields, and their acquaintance with each other increased. They originally belonged to different races. Some of them belonged to the Arab, and some of them belong to Negroes.

Both Senegal and Mauritania depend on the waters of the Senegal River to a much greater extent than the rest of the other basin countries, and this has helped them to increase their agricultural crops very significantly, in addition to the natural pastures that are available in those areas and which have grown on both banks of the river due to its abundant waters, and the growth of these Pastures helped spread the craft of herding among people in those areas.

The course of the Senegal River is characterized by its gradual decline in the coastal region. It flows in a watercourse that is considered low in depth as it approaches the coast. On the river delta lies a wonderful nature reserve that includes more than a million rare and different bird species. This reserve is called the Diaoling National Bird Reserve, and this reserve has been included in the UNESCO list as one of the most prominent and important tourist and archaeological places around the world. The Senegal River has been classified as one of the most vulnerable rivers in the world, and this has resulted from the large proportion of aquatic plants growing in it.
