He who digs a hole for his brother

who drilled a hole to his brother, he fall in it

One of the most famous Arabic proverbs is this proverb - and it has a beautiful story that we will mention - because of the human value it indicates, warning a person and admonishing him not to betray his fellow man, because that would be harmful to both of them.

Human experiences have proven that the avenger has in fact only taken revenge on himself, and treachery is a reprehensible characteristic among all peoples because of the harm it causes to people.

It must be noted here that “fell into it” refers to the one who dug the hole, and not as some believe that the one who dug a hole for his brother (the brother whom the hole was dug in order to trap him) fell into it. Rather, the opposite is that the person who should have been a victim survived, and the person who He dug and planned treachery, and he fell into the evil of his deeds.

The story of the proverb:

It is said that there were two brothers, one of whom was a large, wealthy and distinguished merchant, and the other was blind and poor. The rich brother used to sit near the door of his shop and chat with a group of his merchant friends, and her poor, blind brother would pass by them every day in his shabby clothes and miserable condition, hitting the ground. With his stick, and when the merchants and people turned around, his rich brother became ashamed of him and his condition, and he decided to get rid of him one day, so he summoned his servants and asked them to dig a large hole when the night closed, and when the blind man passed through the door of the shop on his way to pray the dawn prayer, he fell into the hole, and then The servants come and throw dirt on him and bury him.

The servants dug the hole, and when it was time for the dawn prayer, the rich man got up and left his house and passed in front of the shop, forgetting about the hole, so he fell into it, and the servants did not recognize him in the darkness, and they thought he was the blind brother, so they quickly covered the hole with dirt, and in the morning the rich man did not come to open the shop. The workers and servants stood at its door waiting for him, and suddenly the blind man came from afar and hit the ground with his stick. The servants were astonished and looked at each other’s faces, and one of them said: “He dug a hole for his brother and he fell into it.” It is said that this sentence became an Arabic proverb that indicates treachery, betrayal, and revenge. It casts its evils on its owner.
