Emotional and social developments

The social and emotional developments that appear in a child in the fourth month of life include the following:

  • He starts smiling automatically, especially when seeing people.
  • He loves to play with people, uses his voice to express joy, and may cry when playing stops.
  • Imitating certain movements and facial expressions, such as smiling or frowning.

 

Motor developments

The motor development of the child when he reaches four months of age includes the following:

  • The child can control his head well when placed sitting, and he can also hold his head and chest in an upright position while lying on his stomach steadily and without assistance.
  • When the baby is picked up and his feet are on a hard surface, he will begin to push and kick his legs down.
  • The child begins to use both hands more proficiently, as he can hold and shake toys.
  • He begins to pick up anything within his reach and tries to put it in his mouth.
  • He can roll himself from the stomach position to lying on his back.

 

Linguistic developments

The child’s linguistic developments in the fourth month include the following:

  • It responds to sound, and distinguishes emotions by tone of voice.
  • He starts babbling and making some new sounds, and tries to imitate the sounds he hears.
  • Cries in different ways to express hunger, pain, or fatigue.

 

Sensory developments

The sense of sight develops mainly in the fourth month of a child's life. During the first three months of life, the child suffers from difficulty distinguishing between colors, and in the fourth month, the child begins to distinguish shades of red, blue, and yellow, and his preference for bright and contrasting colors is noted. At this stage, the child is also able to continuously track objects and people with his eyes. It is worth noting that the color of the child’s eyes begins to change; Light-colored eyes go through several changes before settling on their color when the child reaches the sixth month of age.
