Study the form of the poem

The poet is advised to study the form of the poem, through the following:

  • Considering the poem’s voice, rhythms, and poetic rhyme, and searching for alliteration, assonance, and other linguistic and rhetorical matters.
  • Analyze the topics of the poem, note its parts, and the extent of their connection and suitability to the poem.
  • Analyze the ideas contained in the poem.
  • Study the form and type of the poem.

Know the poet's goals

The goal that one wants to reach must be known before starting to write poetry, and therefore the poet must ask himself what he wants from his poem. The poem may present a personal experience, or protest against social injustice, or describe the beauty of nature, or other things, and for this reason It is preferable to match the poetry to the desired goal, by making each element of the poem serve a specific purpose.
