Australia: the 3 best islands to visit

Australia is one of the most diverse holiday destinations in the world - with something to suit any taste. When you think of Australia, you probably think of one huge island, filled with stunning soft sandy beaches, clear waters and bustling cities.

Australia may be one big island, but it is surrounded by many more. In fact, it is surrounded by thousands of islands. So, if you're gearing up for a big trip to the Southern Hemisphere, we think we know a few of the best islands to suit your trip and add to your to-do list.

Fitzroy Island

If you are fortunate enough to be in the tropical northern town of Cairns, you have a truly wonderful experience. The Daintree Rainforest, Great Barrier Reef and Atherton Tablelands are just a stone's throw away. But one of my favorite places near Cairns is Fitzroy Island.

Home to Australia's best beach in 2018, Fitzroy Island is just a 45-minute ferry ride from Cairns and is home to mesmerizing tropical landscapes you can't experience anywhere else.

While it's close enough to the mainland for a day trip, Fitzroy Island is really worth the time. Set aside a few days for your visit because there is so much to do on the island.

If you are a water lover, spend some time hitting the water. Possible activities include kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, or even going out on a glass bottom boat adventure. You can witness the rich marine life from any angle here and you can spend hours doing it.

If you're a nature lover and want to see what the land has to offer, you can take a stroll along one of the many self-guided walking trails. Venture into the Rainforest with the Secret Garden trail, or if you're up for something more challenging, hike the Summit Lighthouse walk.

Relaxation may be the best part of the day and Fitzroy Island can certainly help you there. As mentioned earlier, Fitzroy Island is home to the beach that was crowned the best beach in Australia in 2018 - Nuddy Beach.

With soft sands and the perfect Queensland sun, spending some time watching the day pass you by on the beach can be the perfect way to unwind. And if you get too warm in the sun, cool off with a dip in the tropical waters at your feet.

With a wide range of activities that won't cost a dime, Fitzroy Island can cater to any budget, and is suitable for all ages, from families to backpackers, everyone will love their time on this stunning island.

Fraser Island

Queensland is full of natural wonders - we're staying there for another impressive list of gorgeous islands - Fraser Island.

Located on an island Fraser Island Near the southern tip of Queensland, off the coast of Noosa and Rainbow Beach, above the Sunshine Coast.

When you close your eyes and imagine a tropical island, Fraser Island is probably closest to that vision. This island is where rainforest and beach really meet. In fact, Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, and the only place in the world where you will find rainforest trees growing on the dunes.

Fraser Island is such an untouched gem that there aren't even any roads - instead, there's a highway on the beach. You may have seen pictures of ATVs cruising along the beach right near the water. It is an unmissable experience.

Fraser Island is also home to more than 200 freshwater lakes, so when you're exploring the giant sand dunes and need to cool off, there are plenty of places to swim.

Although Fraser Island is perfect for all ages, it really speaks to the adventurous among us – with activities from fishing to surfing and four-wheeling to hiking, there is so much to see and do on Fraser Island.

Bruny Island

On our way south, down to Kaa أسترالياWe find ourselves in Tasmania. Perhaps a little unexpected for an island vacation, and a little different from the tropical offerings we talked about earlier – we have Bruny Island.

Bruny Island is around 35-40 minutes from Kettering by ferry, and Kettering is around 40 minutes' drive from Hobart. Bruny Island is great for a day trip from Hobart, and even better for an extended stay. There is so much to see and do and most importantly eat.

Bruny Island is about 50 km long and consists of South Bruny Island and North Bruny Island and is connected to a stretch of land called the “Neck”. The neck is only about 100m wide and offers great views in every direction. Take a trip to the neck and watch the waves crash on one side and the calm bay on the other. All of this can be seen from the viewing platforms, and if you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of some of the local wildlife, such as the penguins, when they return to their little sand dunes at dusk!!

If you are looking for nature, South Bruny Island is where you can immerse yourself in the national park.
