How do I identify a diamond stone?

Diamond

It is one of the most famous gemstones ever since ancient times, as it is composed of the graphite element that was subjected to forceful environmental conditions that made it turn into what is called diamond, and its name came from the Greek word (ADAMAS), which means unbreakable, and diamond is characterized by its hardness and high ability to scatter light, Which made it the focus of attention in the jewelry industry and other industrial applications.

Diamond testing methods

Among the methods used to test diamonds are the following:

scratch test

Due to the strength and hardness of diamonds, it can easily affect any piece of glass by scratching, so the scratch test is performed by placing a piece of crystal glass on a base and using the diamond piece to be examined to scratch the surface of the glass, but this method is not effective because of the presence of other precious stones that have the same effect. on the glass.

Haze test

Heat dissipation is one of the properties of diamond, as diamond distributes the heat it is exposed to quickly, which makes it difficult for the fog to form on it, the fog test is one of the easiest diamond tests, as the piece of diamond to be examined is placed close to the mouth to be exhaled on it and the fog is formed, and if the fog remains for more than two seconds, it indicates that the diamond piece is fake.

fire test

In this test, the diamond stone is heated by a flame for 30 seconds and then thrown into cold water. If the diamond is real, this will not affect it, unlike other materials that will be destroyed immediately. This property is due to the exposure of diamonds when they are formed to intense heat and great pressure for millions of years.

UV test

Some diamonds sparkle blue if exposed to ultraviolet rays, but as mentioned previously, it is not necessary for a diamond stone to be fake if it does not show any reaction to ultraviolet rays.

Thermal conductivity test

Diamond is a good thermal conductor, as it distributes heat quickly after being heated, unlike other gemstones that distribute heat at a slower rate. However, this test is not always effective, since synthetic moissanite distributes its heat at a rate equal to that of diamond.

Electrical conductivity test

Diamonds are an effective conductor of electricity, unlike other precious stones, and therefore this test conducted by specialists is effective in examining the realness of diamonds.
